The blue rose grew
In a garden on earth
A sight for all to see
For who could say
They had beheld
One as lovely as he?

The little rose began
Like any other rose
Starting from the seed
But when he bloomed
'Twas a vibrant blue!
And the reds paid no heed

My friends and I stared
Feeling rather surprised
At the unexpected display
Then we smiled with glee
And protected it from harm
So it matured and grew each day.

The rose smiled
At humans' wonder
And quietly mild
Blossomed his splendor

The blue rose became
Our secret magic rose
When we gathered for play
It represented a fairy
Or an imagined world
We fathomed stories each day

Then the adults came
In their expensive cars
And they took away our rose
The men wanted to study
This "strange occurrence"
This thriving wild blue rose

My friends and I sighed
And we trudged home
Since "magic" left the land
But when I got home
In my room I then hid
The blue seed in my hand

The rose knew
He'd soon depart
And smiling blue
He left her his heart.
So this I wrote last September. It started out with me being bored and asking myself "Oh why can't I just make up a poem about...a blue rose?" Then the poem just came to me. That happens sometimes. Nothing and then "poof" something hits you.

The idea is based on the fact that when you're a kid, the world is magical. I remember as a kid, my backyard had this cluster of palm trees that created a kind of shelter. As a kid, I liked to pretend I was a Native American Indian, so the palm tree shelter became my house. Well life happens and those little things from childhood disappear. They are not essential, but their absence is felt, like magic taken away.

So this is a bit of fantasy (a true blue rose) combined with the magic of childhood. :)

Wonderful poem - reminds me of a Robert Louis Stevenson poem in that it invokes the wonder of childhood and its simplicity compared to the adult world. The line 'in a garden on earth' has an almost mystical ring to it, and reminds me of Middle English lyrics one finds in manuscripts.
